Your Blog’s About Page, Your Vision, Your Thesis

February 26, 2008

A blog’s "About" or "About Me" page is considered to be one of the most important pages on a blog. The argument is that, with an About page you are able to communicate to blog visitors who you the blogger are and what your blog is about. With a well crafted About page, that describes the remarkable benefits of reading a blog, blog visitors can be converted to blog readers.

A blog’s "About" page is much more than simple landing page. Its value goes beyond enabling visitors to learn something about the blog. An About page’s true value is that it can be used to communicate the blogger’s vision for the blog. At its essence, an About page can be used as a thesis statement that helps guide the content and structure of the blog.

TzuVelli launched only a few weeks ago. I knew that I wanted the blog to be about learning how to make money online, becoming a successful blogger, and in general leveraging the Internet to earn an income. But, when TzuVelli launched I hadn’t completely formulated that vision. Because I had not clearly formulated my vision for the blog, its focus was scattered across 16 different categories. Once TzuVelli launched I realized that its focus was too broad. I needed to create a clearer focus. I knew I needed to make some changes.

As I was figuring out what changes I needed to make I caught myself continuously referring back to the About page. Once I recognized what I was doing, it dawned on me that an "About" page is very similar, in function, to that of a thesis statement. If a thesis statement is well crafted, it will help keep you focused on the purpose of the essay. The same is true for a well crafted About page.

Taking cues from TzuVelli’s About page I was able to sharpen the focus of the blog. I reduced the number of categories from 16 to 4. This simple step reduced the stress I felt about creating content. It has enabled me to focus more clearly on my goals for the blog. And, I now have more time to be creative, and finish all of those to-do’s that keep piling up.

Have you gone beyond the basic elements on your About page? A good About page is one that reaches out and makes a connection with visitors. It motivates them to return to your blog, or subscribe to your blog. But, the perfect About page acts as a thesis statement for your blog. A perfect About page acts as a guide helping you to stay focused on your vision for your blog.

Hi - Reducing the categories was a smart idea. I also did that when I switched to the Revolution theme and it looks much neater.

I like what you’ve done here - the theme looks excellent. I’m still trying to learn it and tweak it.

That’s a great insight. I actually don’t have an About Me page on my blog or website yet, though I’ve been meaning to put one up. Maybe it’s time to stop procrastinating and start doing!

@Cath: I think the Revolution theme is awesome. The types of customizations you can incorporate are only limited by your imagination.

@Joshua: A well written About page can be a little bit of work. But, the return is well worth the invested time.
