The Art And Science Of Keyword Research

Keyword research is one part science, one part art, and two parts intuition. Knowing how to do keyword research is one of the most important Internet marketing skills to develop. If you can’t pick the right keywords, keyword phrases and long tail keyword phrases, nothing else matters; you won’t be able to attract the right search users. If you don’t attract the right search users to your sight you won’t make any money online.  It is as simple as that. If you don’t care about making money online then, why are you reading this. And why would you care about keyword research.

A few month ago I wrote a few posts on keywords, keyword research and keyword sniping. So, why write another post about keyword research. First, there is always something new to be said about doing keyword research, keyword research tools, building keyword lists and  using keyword suggestion tools. You will never stop learning about those topics. Second, since I wrote those posts, I have a lot more experience with keyword research, and now have a little bit more to say about the process.

As I said in the opening line of this post keyword research is one part science, one part art and two parts intuition. First, let me say this, there is NO exact formula to keyword research. Anyone that tells you that there is a fool proof, 100 percent guaranteed formula  for building a winning keyword list that you can make money with, is lying to you. There is no such thing as a sure fire formula for discovering keywords that you can make money from.

The Science Of Keyword Research

The science of keyword research includes keyword research tools, keyword suggestion tools; they are different, and understanding all the data you get back from those tools. With the science of keyword research you can build a keyword list, research how competitiveness of a keyword or keyword phrase, and research the viability of of long tail keyword phrases. But, the science of keyword research is in the middle of the process not at the beginning. Unfortunately, many people get stuck in the middle and they never really learn about the beginning and the end of the process. We get mesmerized by the data that keyword research tools produce and don’t stop to think that statistics and other data are just that. we don’t stop to think that humans, are not bound by search engine statistics and tend to go our own way. That’s where art comes in.

The Art Of Keyword Research

The art of keyword research occurs at the beginning of keyword list building process and near the end of the process. For example, so your an internet marketer, your itching to build a new site with a new product and begin making more money online. So, where do you start looking for a new niche. Being able to begin the keyword research process with good viable keywords is an art form. Some people have it some people don’t. Understanding how and where to start looking for good keywords that can be leveraged for making money online is an art form. If you don’t have the touch it can be learned but the process is more formulaic than intuitive.

The art of keyword research also comes into play near the end of the keyword research process. keywords, keyword phrases and long tail keywords are and can be semantically and logically associated with other keywords of the same near meaning that will drive profitable traffic to your site. Associating keywords and keyword phrases in this way is a learned art form. Understanding how to associate keywords in this way means that you can build profitable keyword lists without having to generate huge keyword lists.

Even if you have the art and science of keyword research down. Even if you understand how to use keyword research tools to your advantage without over doing it. Even if you understand the art of keyword research and are able to easily understand the potential linkages between keywords, product niches and semantically similar niches and keywords. That keyword list you just spent all that time building may not be profitable. Understanding whether or not a keyword or keyword phrase will be profitable requires intuition.

Intuition And Keyword Research

Making money online requires good research and intuition. You have to have both. One without the other is not a formula for making money online; but at best it is a formula for mediocrity, at best, and failure at worst. Your intuition about whether or not a keyword niche will be profitable comes only from experience. In the beginning you will make false starts. You will loose more money than you will make. But, the more keyword research you do the more intuitive you will become about profitability of a keyword niche.

The more keyword research you do, the more intuitive you will become about the process itself. What once looked like a hit or miss process will begin to come into focus as an art. You will eventually be able to develop your own points of reference to use to guide you through the keyword research process. Eventually you be able to associate those keywords with profitable niches in which you are able to compete. And that is the art and science of keyword research.

    You are absolutely right. Knowing how to choose the right keyword goes beyond working through a formula and doing basic research. you have to understand how it all fits together. The is a true art. Knowing which keywords will attract the right people and which long tail keywords will give you an entry into that competitive niche that you otherwise would not be able to come close to competing in.
